Q's Top 20: #1 - Grizzly Bear

Tuesday, January 1, 2013 | Categories: Music, Q Blog, Q's Top 20 Albums Of 2012 |

After a year of kick-ass music, and a month of counting down our favourite releases, we've arrived at #1 on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2012Shields byGrizzly Bear

Album number four from the Brooklyn band comes a decade after Grizzly Bear began as the solo project of Ed Droste. In that time, the membership has grown along with the scale of the sound. The music of Shields comes from woodwinds, synths, tambourines, triangles, chimes, guitars, organs... you name it. It's an incredible variety of ingredients that come together with grace and elegance. And it's clear this was a carefully assembled record, but it feels cultivated rather than fussed-over, grown rather than built.

For all the effort that has gone into them, the songs are alive, breathing, vital, mysterious and yet infectious. If you want an example of the most interesting and honest rock-pop of the moment that's happening outside the corridors of manicured pop stars and manufactured corporate clones, this is the place to arrive in 2012.
